PhD Candidate Nguyen Huu Tho Successfully Defends His Doctoral Dissertation at Hue University

       On February 27, 2026, Hue University held the doctoral dissertation defense at the Hue University level for PhD candidate Nguyen Huu Tho, a member of the fourth cohort admitted in 2021 to the doctoral program in Biology (Code: 9420101). His dissertation, entitled “Generation of Mutant Lines of the Hue Purple Dendrobium Orchid (Dendrobium anosmum Lindl.) through Experimental Mutagenesis,” was completed under the academic supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Truong Thi Bich Phuong from the University of Sciences, Hue University, and Dr. Nguyen Kim Cuc from the Institute of Biotechnology, Hue University. The Institute of Biotechnology, Hue University, served as the training institution.

       The defense was attended by representatives of Hue University, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vo Viet Minh Nhat, Deputy Head of the Department of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, together with staff members responsible for postgraduate training. Representing the Institute of Biotechnology were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hue, Vice Director of the Institute, faculty members, and doctoral candidates currently studying at the Institute. The event was also attended by the candidate’s colleagues, friends, family members, and others interested in the dissertation.

        The Hue University Doctoral Dissertation Evaluation Committee consisted of seven members: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Loc, University of Sciences, Hue University, Chair; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Ngoc Nam, Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, Reviewer 1; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Mong Diep, Quy Nhon University, Reviewer 2; Assoc. Prof. Dr. La Viet Hong, Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, Reviewer 3; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Lien, University of Sciences, Hue University, Secretary; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Quach Ngo Diem Phuong, University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, Member; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Bich Ngoc, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Member.

       At the beginning of the defense, the Committee reviewed the candidate’s academic background, research achievements, study progress, and scientific publications. PhD candidate Nguyen Huu Tho then presented the rationale for the research, its scientific and practical significance, the research methodology, and the major findings of the dissertation. He also highlighted the scientific and practical contributions of his research. The research outcomes have been published in WoS/Scopus-indexed journals as well as reputable domestic scientific journals.

       Following the dissertation presentation and the candidate’s responses to questions raised by the Committee members, the Committee convened a closed meeting and conducted a vote. The dissertation was unanimously approved with all seven Committee members voting in favor (7/7). The Committee congratulated both the supervisors and PhD candidate Nguyen Huu Tho on the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation.

       In his remarks, PhD candidate Nguyen Huu Tho expressed his sincere gratitude to Hue University; the Institute of Biotechnology, Hue University; the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; the Dissertation Evaluation Committee; his supervisors; the Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VINIF); as well as his colleagues, friends, and family for their continuous support, encouragement, and favorable conditions throughout his doctoral studies and dissertation research.
