On March 8th, 2023, Hue University organized a doctoral dissertation defense ceremony for PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My who was recognized as PhD. candidate in 2018 with a major in Biology, code: 9420101 and trained by Institute of Biotechnology, Hue University (HUIB). PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My completed the dissertation title “Species composition and cylindrospermopsin-producing ability of cyanobacteria in some reservoirs in Dak Lak” under supervision by Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Thi Thu Lien – HUIB and Assoc.Prof. Ton That Phap – University of Sciences, Hue University.
On the side of Hue University, there were Assoc.Prof. Vo Viet Minh Nhat – Deputy Director of Department of Academic and Students’ Affairs and officials in charge of related work; on the side of HUIB, there were Dr. Nguyen Duc Huy – Deputy Director with supervisors and PhD. candidates studying at the unit. Besides, colleagues, friends, relatives of PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My and other interested attendees also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, the Council announced the scientific background, research achievements, learning process and scientific research results of PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My during the implementation of the dissertation. After that, PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My presented in detail the necessity of implementing the dissertation, scientific and practical significance, research methods, the research results in front of the Council. PhD. candidate Ngo Thi Diem My also mentioned the scientific novelty of the dissertation, including: (1) Providing a cyanobacterial species classification and cylindrospermopsin-producing (CYN-producing) potential cyanobacteria in Ea Nhai and Buon Phong reservoirs in Dak Lak, contributing to the database of cyanobacterial species structure; (2) Providing information on toxin CYN concentrations in Ea Nhai and Buon Phong reservoirs in Dak Lak; (3) Identifying the essential of environmental factors controlling the growth of CYN-producing potential cyanobacteria populations in the natural environment, resulting in taking measures to control and restrain the outbreak of CYN-producing potential cyanobacteria; (4) The research results will serve as a basis for forecasting the risk of pollution as well as proposing measures to manage the group of harmful cyanobacteria, contributing to the protection of water resources and public health. The research results have been published in ISI-Scopus journals and prestigious domestic journals.

The Council then questioned and commented for the PhD. candidate as well as listened to the answer from PhD. candidate. After that, the Council exchanged and voted. With 7/7 votes in favor, the Council congratulated the supervisors and the PhD. candidate successfully defended the dissertation.
